the friday five

1 & 2 can totally go together.  Cos they're everywhere.  Who knew pineapples and peacocks were such fashionable items?!  Not me, that's for sure.  Apparently pineapples are no longer a fruit you eat but a pattern that you must put on everything...cushions & phone covers are top of the decorating list.  And don't even get me started on the peacock phase.  No offence to all of the peacock lovers out there, but I just don't get it.  Although my cousin, Dal, loves them sick and has numerous peacock items scattered throughout her home and she's totes stylish, so they can't be all bad.  Or can they?

3.  Cake Pops.  I mean, really?  You want me to make a cake from scratch, bake it, wait for it to cool, tip it into a bowl, mash it up with some other random ingredient that will allow me to mould the cake into 4.975 balls of cake.  Then I have to melt some form of icing, stick a lollipop stick into the balls of cake, whack them into the melted icing and then think of a way to stand them up so the icing dries/drips everywhere.  FFS.  Call me Old Fashioned, but I think I'd rather just make a cake and you know, ice and slice it.

4.  Ok, so as most of you would know I have really curly hair.  Which on a bad day looks remarkably like a Kath & Kim frizzy perm.  I have no idea what it looks like on a good day, because when you have curly hair, good hair days NEVER happen.  But what does happen a lot is the following conversation between myself and numerous randoms (usually while waiting to be served at the supermarket....yep, checkouts are the place for complete and utter strangers to strike up conversation with me about my hair)...
THEM: "Wow, look at your hair.  Is it natural?"
ME:  "yes, it is"
THEM:  "Really?  You're so lucky. Most people would pay a fortune to have hair like yours."
ME: Smile politely and say "thank you" all the while wanting to actually say, "Really?  When was the last time anyone you know went to the hairdresser and actually asked for an 80's perm?"
So just to clarify, yes, I have really curly hair. No, I don't get it permed and trust me, neither should you.  Unless of course you love the Kath & Kim Frizzy Perm Look and would like to start some sort of Curly Haired Support Group with me. In which case, Perm Away!

5.  Presidential Inaugurations.  Now I don't want to get all political on anyone here, and I certainly don't want to upset my US Readers (hi Beryl!) but seriously, how much would that Inauguration Ceremony have cost?!  I mean, I'm all for pomp and ceremony and I sure do love a good celebration, but maybe some of that cash could've been slung towards some schools or hospitals?  Or maybe everyone volunteered their time and it didn't actually cost a thing?  In which case, carry on Mr President.  You're doing a great job.

OK, that's me done for another week.  How about you?  Got anything to share that you just don't get at the moment?  And for those of you playing along at home, there's bonus points for the first person to notice what all of the 5 things have in common this week...GOOD LUCK!!

  1. I love pineapples! It's not a new thing, it's very retro actually. I've got a fabulous pineapple lamp that's a bit art deco inspired, I really love it.

But I'm with you on the cakepops. I've never had one that I actually thought tasted good. All the texture of the cake is lost and it's cloyingly sweet due to the overabundance of icing. It's one fad I can do without.

  2. I haven't got any of the latest trends in pineapple-wares but do have some vintage pineapple jugs, s&p shakers etc of my Nanna's that she obviously got in the early days of the Big Pineapple. Her and my grandfather retired from their dairy farm to Buderim back in 1969 so the Big Pineapple was quite an attraction in the early days. I love your hair Kirsten. I always had an annoying, natural 'kink' in my hair that 'naturally' never went the way you wanted so opted for a few perms in my late teens. Hideous. LOL And as for the peacock wreath, I thought you were going to say wreaths in general. WTF? Some people make a wreath for every season, every celebration, event, you name it. LOL Is it the letter "P"? You can give me the prize next time you seem me. LOL Have a great weekend.

    1. Don't they?! I tried one when we were in the states a couple of years ago and it was disgusting. So so sweet yet dry and cardboard-ish all at the same time. But they do look good, especially on a party table, so I guess that's where the attraction lies?!
