Sophie's Rockstar Party

Saturday was what can only be described as a Huge Day around here.  It was Rockstar Central as we celebrated Sophie's 8th Birthday.  Like most things around here, this party looked slightly more impressive/expensive than it actually was.  That's because I have a very rare talent of a) not paying full retail price for anything and b) I gave myself a strange thing called a Budget and stuck to it. Here are the party details...

Firstly, let's discuss the backdrop.  I was going to go hard with a backdrop of streamers but the streamers I purchased online absolutely stunk.  Stunk I tell you. I don't know where they were packaged, but I'd suggest the streamer factory also manufactures frozen fish because  every packet of streamers had an appalling waft of seafood coming from them.  Eeeewww.

So, I had to scrap that plan and think of something else. And think of it quickly.  I had a $2 packet of hot pink bowls in my hand while I was thinking, took one look at them and thought "I wonder if I could whip up a star using these."  Turns out I could.

All of the rockstar accessories on this table were purchased from Kmart.  All up, I spent about 50 bucks.  Which sounds like a lot but the girls got to take all of their chosen accessories home with them, so they doubled as party favours.  Winning!

Here are the bags that the girls put all of their rockstar accessories into to take home.  I whipped up the labels using sticker sheets and already had the ribbon in my wrapping supplies.  The bags were purchased from an art & craft shop for $1 each.

And of course, every Rockstar party needs a red carpet.  I tried to talk Sophie into a hot pink carpet (because this mum likes everything to be colour co-ordinated) to which her reply was, "Um, that's just weird.  When have you ever seen anyone walk on a pink carpet?"  Fair call.  So red it was.  I got it from the same place that sold me the dodgy smelling streamers for $19.  The inflatable microphone and guitar were from the local cheapie shop for $4 each.

And here we have the cake table.  Inside that hot pink icing was a marble cake consisting of black, hot pink and white butter cake.  I was going to get a cake made, but could not justify spending over $150 (!) on a cake that was only going to have the icing licked off the top of it and the rest thrown in the bin.  So I made my own.  And it cost around 5 bucks all up.  Stand by for the recipe and how to guide later in the week.

I also whipped up slushies for the kids and personalised their cups with DIY stickers.  The cups and straws were left over from another party, so cost nothing this time around.

During the actual party, the girls had a rockstar makeover, danced & walked the red carpet.  There was more laughing, squealing and high pitched screaming happening in our living room than at a One Direction concert and it was brilliant.  8 is such a lovely age.  I wish I could keep her 8 forever.

And there we have it.  Quite possibly the cheapest party I've ever done.  Which pleased Scott no end and left more money in this week's budget for important things like champagne and beer.  Tight Arse K&Co over & out.
